| Why do you feed a roughage mix? Unlike a human, a horse makes stomach acid all day long AND a horse only makes saliva while chewing. Saliva neutralizes stomach acid. It is not for nothing, then, that horses in the wild graze an average of sixteen hours a day. The horse gets most of its energy from the digestion of fiber in the large intestine. Therefore, a horse’s digestion is more complex than that of a human. In nature, horses are constantly looking for different types of grass and fiber. This variety of fiber has a proven positive effect on intestinal flora. Feeling good starts inside. Florian’s roughage mixes take into account the complex digestive system:
